AZTI-Tecnalia is a technology centre which specialises in marine and food research and is committed to the social and economic development of the fisheries, marine and food sectors. It has 29 years of experience and has carried out over 2,000 projects with companies and public institutions. It is currently leading 30 European projects. It is part of the Tecnalia Corporation, which is made up of three research centres.

The Food Research Unit has 80 technicians and researchers divided into 4 main areas of specialisation: AZTI-Tecnalia has three main centres, two in Biscay (Sukarrieta and Derio) and one in Gipuzkoa (Pasaia). With its team of 225 professionals and a turnover of 18 million euros in 2011, AZTI-Tecnalia is a research and innovation centre that is divided into two business units: marine research and food research. The latter is focused on improving the quality, productivity and innovation of food products and processes.
